Course Description
This class is tailored to children of all levels, ages 8 and up, in a small group format with a maximum of 5 students. Neuro-diversity is welcomed!
Throughout this 6-week course (2 hours/week) students develop a “tool box” of possibilities offered by the medium at hand which they can draw on throughout the session. These guide-posts are explored through demonstrations, individual instruction, direct observation, hand-outs and visual examples drawn from various periods throughout art history. Through reflection about what they are doing, how they are doing it, what it means and why it is interesting, students will develop clarity and confidence in their creative process.
Depending on their level, students will either learn or perfect a range of technical and observational skills of drawing and oil painting including, but not limited to:
- Discovery and exploration of the various tools, techniques and mediums
- Composition and how to edit an image, perspective, negative space
- Color selection and identification, the impact of warm vs. cool colors, hue vs. value, mixing and palette organization
- Chiaroscuro which is the Italian technical term to describe the effect of light and dark used in painting and drawing to create three-dimensional volume through "shading"
